“Miniclip is an award-winning online company, known for their browser-based games. The site was first launched in 2000 by Robert Small. Small was fresh out of university when he founded the company with Tihan Presbie in 2001, and today provides cartoons and Ecards alongside their selection of games that are classic as well as new creations. It is the world’s largest online games website, with 34 million unique users per month and is also the largest privately held website on the Internet. Its popularity originally arose from a game called Dancing Bush. Most games are created in Adobe Flash or Shockwave. A few are written in Java. Miniclip currently offers content in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

[…] Miniclip showcases a variety of games categorized in several genres including a special menu for visitors using the Wii browser. Some games are downloadable and usable on your own websites or message boards, while others have free game demo downloads to let the user play a trial before purchasing the full game or code to unlock more features.

There are several types of games produced for the website, the first simply being games created by Miniclip or production companies affiliated with Miniclip such as Rayamedia. Such games include Commando, On The Run, Zed, Dancing Bush, and Snow Line. Miniclip occasionally host advergames for various companies, such as Hollywood movie houses. For example, games have been made to promote Superman Returns, Chicken Little, and Arthur & The Invisibles. Normally a couple of months after the release of the movie, these games are pulled from Miniclip’s full listing of games. The games are still hosted on the site, as clever viewers can easily change a URL around to access them.

Miniclip also sponsors the creation and distribution of somes games, and hosts popular games created by third parties; games such as Monster Trucks, Heli Attack 3, and MotherLoad. Hosting agreements are also made for large-scale online based interactive games such as RuneScape, Robot Rage, Puzzle Pirates, and Club Penguin.

It is worth noting that since its release in March 2006, Club Penguin has stayed #1 on Miniclip’s top ten games to this day (a streak that only RuneScape was once able to manage), being pushed to #2 only once by the Miniclip-original Commando.”
